September 12, 2012

Broadway.com has a great interview with Hugh featuring his thoughts on some of his best-know roles, including Marius Pontmercy and Jean Valjean, Lestat, and, of course, The Phantom.

I originated the role of Marius in the first national tour of Les Miserables [in 1988] before joining the Broadway company. It was one of those things where I was Marius: I was 23 years old, wide-eyed and innocent, and it was my first big show and my Broadway debut. It was an amazing part because I got to grow up on stage. Marius starts out as a boy and becomes a man, and that was a perfect fit at that time in my life.

A snippet from a recent review of The Phantom of The Opera from the Indian Hills High School's on-line newspaper:

With Hugh Panaro as the Phantom, Trista Moldovan as Christine, and Kyle Barisich as Raoul, it is difficult to be disappointed. The three leads have sensational vocal talent and superb acting skills, but Hugh Panaro definitely shines above the rest of the cast. His voice has an captivating quality that is paired with a beautiful operatic range, making for an all around spectacular voice. These qualities plus his ability to hold soft, drawn out high notes, aid him in emanating the Phantom in his performance.
