From Cleveland.com's review of last night's Broadway Goes To The Movie's concert with Anne Runolfsson and the Cleveland Pops.

But Panaro and Runolfsson slipped into each song as if they’d inhabited these pieces for decades....In several cases, this was true. Panaro performed the title role in “The Phantom of the Opera” more than 1,000 times, and his experience showed in his impassioned account of "Music of The Night."

A fine review of Hugh's performance from Thursday evening's performance of Broadway Showstoppers in Houston, Texas:

Just when I was thinking no one could top this, Panaro returned to deliver a hauntingly beautiful “Music of the Night,” from The Phantom of the Opera. I have seen the show twice on Broadway and once in Las Vegas, but this Phantom topped them all with the purest of theatrical and vocal power. Panaro is quite ready for his soon return to the Great White Way as his thunderous standing ovation made very clear.

Hugh discusses his return to the masked role (among other things) in an excellent interview with Broadway.com.

Broadway.com - Masked Man Hugh Panaro On His 20-Year History In The Phantom of The Opera

"I think I have a lot more to bring to the role now than five years ago. A fan sent me a pirated tape of my last performance, and I listened to myself pretty objectively. There were things I didn’t remember doing, and things I thought I could do better now, especially going in with a new Christine—we have the opportunity to create something fresh and exciting. Believe it or not, Sara Jean Ford and I had just done South Pacific together in concert with the Rochester Symphony. We were joking about the fact that we had both been in Phantom and saying, “Wouldn’t it be fun to do the show together someday?” A couple of months later, here we are. I think the universe was at work."

New photos from the September 12 performance with Lisa Vroman, Stephanie J. Block, and the Quad Cities Symphony Orchestra have been added to the Concerts page.

September 17, 2010

From a blogger's review:

The Quad Cities Symphony Orchestra was having a Riverfront Pops at LeClaire Park in Davenport. It was comprised of Broadway songs and featured three Broadway stars: Stephanie J. Block (9 to 5), Lisa Vroman (Phantom of the Opera), and Hugh Panaro (Phantom of the Opera). In fact, Hugh had just begun his second Broadway run in the role of the masked phantom the week before. Coincidentally, I was already slated to review the recent two role changes just a few days after this concert. I must admit that having seen this production once on Broadway and once in Toronto, his performance was the most outstanding in regards to both his acting and vocal ability.

Hugh originally took the role of Raoul in 1990 and was later cast as “the man behind the mask” in 1999. He either must have been quite young as Raoul or keeps himself from not looking his age now.

December 30, 2010

Hugh shares another memory - a touching one from Oliver! - with Playbill.com

"One moment that immediately pops into my head happened about this time last year. I was playing Fagin in Oliver! at the Walnut Street Theater in Philadelphia and the night before we opened, my car was vandalized. They shattered my windshield and stole my GPS.  At one point that evening, one of the children, Will, who was five years old and the youngest cast member, came up to me and very kindly said that he had heard about my car and said he was sorry that I was robbed. Well, word travelled fast through the 40 (yes 40!) children (two casts of 20!).  About a week later, there was a knock at my dressing room door and when I opened it, there were all the kids with their chaperone. They handed me a poem they had written: “We heard that someone picked your pocket, that made us kind of sad, and then we thought some more about it, it made us kind of mad! So here’s a little gift for you from all your girls and boys, we hope that you can use it more than any silly toys”!  At this point they handed me a brand new Garmin GPS!  There I stood in my prosthetic Fagin nose bawling my eyes out. That was a pretty special moment to me."
