Photos from the recent concert at Wolf Trap have been added to the the Candids and Concerts pages of the Gallery.  Thanks once again to Jan and Jack Powers.

A very nice review of Hugh's recent performance with the San Diego Symphony has been posted.

Clearly for this viewer, the vocal ‘star’ of the evening was handsome tenor Hugh Panaro – a prominent voice with much quality ‘vibrato’, served him best in “Maria” (from WSS), in his punch-and-go delivery of “Luck Be A Lady” (from GUYS & DOLLS), and Panaro’s recreation of the famed Broadway star Colm Wilkinson’s delivery on LES MISERABLES famed prayer song “Bring Him Home” …with this song, Panaro stopped the show! Hugh Panaro’s unique versatility has allowed him a distinguished career, not only in the theater, but also in recording studios and concert halls throughout the world. He has the distinction of having played both RAOUL and the PHANTOM, a role he performed over 1,000 times in the Broadway production of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA….and he recently toured throughout Europe with the legendary Barbra Streisand....As one might expect, the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, closed out the BRAVO BROADWAY NOW program, with both Hugh Panaro and Christiane Noll doing great honor to the play’s Phantom-Christine duets…..

Hugh Panaro, received the much-deserved ‘standing ovation’ on his full-out vocal on MUSIC OF THE NIGHT ….a stunning conclusion!

November 19, 2009

Hugh was joined by a very special guest for this video blog from the Opening Night of Oliver!

From one blogger's review of the show:

Fagin (Hugh Panaro) was the star of the show and came very close to the quintessential Fagin of Ron Moody in the classic movie. The makeup - especially his gnarly teeth – surely was an hour ritual nightly. Fagin may be the most lovable con man and thief in Broadway musical.  His renditions of “You've Got To Pick A Pocket or Two” and “Be Back Soon” sung to his band of rapscallions, is the perfect concoction of rapacious rascal and loving mentor. “Reviewing The Situation”, a reminiscence of his life and deeds, is poignant. His characterization is worth the admission price alone.

Hugh Panaro on Facebook

November 21, 2009

Oliver! reviews are coming in!

That goes double for Hugh Panaro, the East Oak Lane native and Broadway actor (Phantom of the Opera, the title role), who returns after his memorable 2008 Walnut portrayal of Jean Valjean, the focal character in Les Miz. Panaro, who spends at least an hour before each performance uglying up in an otherworldly way, is a Fagin with a heart.

He plays the greedy Pied Piper of Pilfering with a wink-wink here and a bark-bark there. You get the feeling this Fagin actually knows better - and is, deep down, better in theory than in practice. Layering the character is no simple matter; at root, Fagin's a two-dimensional cartoon. But Panaro gives him a third perspective, in his way with the words and the songs.

Another production photo of Hugh as Fagin has been added to the Oliver! page, along with some photos from Opening Night.  More pictures to come.

More excellent reviews for Oliver! are coming in.

Hugh Panaro...was a stroke of genius as Fagin...I was reminded of Johnny Depp’s Character in the Pirates of the Caribbean film. They were both whimsical and hilariously funny characters that make you love them instantly. Who can resist a long haired man who makes you laugh non-stop?

For those of you in the Philadelphia area, don't forget that the cast of Oliver! will perform in tomorrow's Thanksgiving parade.

2009 6abc IKEA Thanksgiving Day Parade

Another review has been added to the Oliver! page, as well.

Finally, Philly native and Broadway veteran Hugh Panaro steals the show with his portrayal of Fagin. The writing provides us with a Fagin we love to hate. He corrupts these boys, Oliver especially, is under the thumb of Bill Sykes, and hides many treasures solely for his own benefit. However, Panaro’s portrayal adds humanization to Fagin. His skill with word play and comedy make the numbers “You’ve Got to Pick a Pocket,”  “Be Back Soon,” and “Reviewing the Situation,” absolute highlights of the show. It is this human side of Fagin that makes Sykes the true, and perhaps only villain, of the show.
