“Every song in this show has a special connection to me. It is a very personal show. I want people to leave feeling like they dropped by, I told a few stories and sang a few songs and we all had a great time.”

An interview in advance of this week's Broadway Voices concert in Garner.

A photo posted by Des Moines Symphony (@desmoinessymphony) on

"The interlude from the talent competition on the Riley Stage was capped by a song by Broadway singer and actor Hugh Panaro from Brooklyn, New York, who was also scheduled to perform Thursday night at the fair with the Des Moines Symphony. Panaro unleashed a heart-wrenching rendition of 'Bring Him Home' from 'Les Miserables.' It had all the feel of an elegy. We often describe the State Fair as unrelentingly loud, boisterous and crass, but these small, touching moments are as much a part of it if you stop to notice."

A brief personal note.

I've been the editor/admin of hugh-panaro.net since the late summer of 2005.  A few months ago, my boyfriend and best friend of eight years developed a chronic hoarseness which led to his diagnosis with throat cancer in October.  While James' cancer is early stage and treatable, there have been complications with the radiation treatments leading to an urgent temporary tracheostomy.  Updates will continue to this site and Hugh's public Facebook page as needed, but replies to e-mails may be much slower than usual (although they will be forwarded to Hugh and/or his agents and manager immediately).  Over the last eleven years, I met many wonderful people through my work on this site and I'm happy to call some of you friends.  During this very difficult time, I will be serving as James' full-time caregiver.  I have set up a GoFundMe page to assist with our day-to-day expenses.  If you can donate or even just share the link, it will be greatly appreciated.  Thank you, Happy Holidays, and if I don't update before January, best wishes for 2017.

Over the years, many fans have gotten to know Soot.  Hugh's black Labradoodle was a regular visitor backstage and even on stage during Hugh's last curtain call at THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.  Hugh's beloved dog has passed away at the age of thirteen and he will be greatly missed.

Soot was also featured in this Character Study video a few years ago.
