blogs.wsj.com - Speakeasy - After 25 years, Phantom stays the same
"I don’t really sing too much from this show in the shower but I will say, not to bring down the room, but I lost my dad in July and when I hear that song, I think of him and wish he were here. Since July, that particular song has taken on a whole different meaning for me. I’m up in that little cross every night. I listen to that and recall my dad, which is very tricky, because I don’t want to get too emotional because that’s not what the next scene is about."

For Valentine's Day, BroadwayWorld asked Broadway stars about their favorite love songs. Here's Hugh's answer:
I’m gonna go with “Tonight” from West Side Story. I still get chills during the intro, “Only you, you’re the only thing I’ll see forever.” It’s so innocent and pure and then it erupts into this musical heart beat of “suns and moons” that’s so primal and thrilling. By the final “sleep well and when you dream, dream of me…”, I’m gone!

Every performance, there's a new audience out there. And there may be a 12-year-old or a 13-year-old kid out there that wants to maybe do this for a living. And that's my story. You know, my parents brought me to see my first Broadway show when I was 12 years old.

"So, you know. I auditioned for it and read for it initially and might’ve gotten two, um, I got two callbacks and gone on camera and um, I remember the one thing I did that made me feel like I bad boy. (laughs) This is so stupid- I got one of those fake tattoos and I think I put it- I wore a short-sleeved shirt and I just had it on so the bottom of the tattoo was sticking out, so it wasn’t obvious, you could probably tell it was a fake, but that made me feel like, “ooh, I’m edgy, I’m bad.”

A nice review of the weekend's Mad Men concerts with the Milwaukee Symphony:
Hugh Panaro, a singer on the cusp of tenor and baritone, has toiled for years as the Phantom of the Opera, but popera has not cramped his ability to swing. His dead-on pitch, seemingly effortless tone production, great diction and excellent rhythm made him a worthy heir to Sinatra’s arrangement. He sounded just as at home through the whole range of material, from Besame Mucho to Amy Winehouse’s “You Know I’m No Good” to a pair of rowdy duets with Janet Dacal, “Somethin’ Stupid” and “Feeling Good.”

For those of you who were unable to attend the memorial service for Kevin Gray at the Majestic last month, video is now available from Kevin's wife, former Phantom cast member Dodie Petit. In the clip below, Hugh and Teri Hansen sing "Only Make Believe" from Show Boat.
Swirling neon green mists, ominous organ music, and a clip of the now
iconic unmasking of Lon Chaney set the mood for the 105-minute
documentary, The Phantom of The Opera - Unmasking The Masterpiece.
This video takes a detailed look at the history of the
1925 film, as well as its impact on popular culture (from make-up
marketed with Mary Philbin's image to collectible monster models) and
the scores of movies that followed (including the 1943
remake with Claude Rains to the most recent versions). It features
a number of interviews, including Carla Laemmle, Ron Chaney, and
long-time Broadway music director Tim Stella. The interviews are
are enhanced by a treasure trove of film stills,
behind-the-scenes-photos, concept art, and posters.
Hugh has a nearly fifteen-minute interview in which he talks about a variety of Phantom topics from the challenge of singing with half of his face “soundproofed,” his thoughts on the Lon Chaney film, and his make-up routine (“I'm always eating...and drinking...eating").

Valjean, who stole a loaf of bread and paid with years in prison, is sensitively portrayed by Hugh Panaro. Panaro is particularly distinctive in the early scenes, giving the persecuted Valjean real bite. Sneering and tossing his head, he embarks on another crime almost as soon as he's out on parole.
Who could blame him? But when an insightful bishop (Jerry Jay Cranford, sober and sweet) saves him from returning to prison, Jean Valjean has an epiphany. He embarks on a life of such goodness that by the end of the play, people call him a saint. But between Panaro's subtle understatement of gesture and his rich, heartfelt delivery of the prayerful “Bring Him Home,” he makes sure that we see Jean Valjean as a real man, not a cardboard cutout.
From the first review of Les Misérables now open at muny.org:

More praise in a review from Riverfront Times:
A few minutes later, Jean Valjean (Hugh Panaro) sits behind the barricades during a student revolution and ever so tenderly sings the exquisite "Bring Him Home." Panaro's crystalline rendition of this musical prayer is a humbling reminder that theater, at its most exalting, is indeed a religious experience. Panaro registers again in Valjean's death scene, which (in true French tradition) is as flamboyantly maudlin as the final crescendo in Cyrano de Bergerac. When Valjean suggests that "to love another person is to see the face of God," Panaro's radiant sound instills Forest Park with grace.

A nice mention in a recent review of The Phantom of The Opera:
It is challenging to determine exactly how Christine feels about the Phantom: intrigued, terrified, inspired, pity? We know that she and her old friend Raoul (played by Jeremy Hays’s understudy Greg Mills) are in love, but she seems to be transfixed by the Phantom’s command when he wills it. To be honest, with a voice like Hugh Panaro’s, I do not blame her. All the voices in The Phantom of the Opera were superb; however, Panaro’s voice stood out among the group like dripping honey.
